Community Initiatives in the Midlands

Lock Chip Innovation in Shropshire
Enterprise has recently trialled a new innovative road surface dressing material ‘Lock Chip’ in Shropshire. The benefits provided by this innovative dressing material include less traffic disruption due to the speed of the process, less chipping damage to vehicles as the road is sealed in a matter of hours rather than days, and a surface that is sealed from water penetration.

The Hole Story for Staffordshire
Our local roads teams in Staffordshire provide community roadshows, entitled ‘The Hole Story’. These feature a mobile display with a purpose-built mini roundabout, information column and highways equipment. The aim is to raise public awareness of the work that we do and be on hand to answer any questions.

Steps in Stafford
Our grounds maintenance team based at the MOD operations in Stafford used its initiative to build some steps with recycled materials. This was done to improve an area that was being used by site staff and military personnel. The work has transformed a small piece of waste ground into a nicely landscaped area that will benefit all those who use it. We have since delivered another landscaping project on-site and created a war memorial.

Local Roads Helping Students in Shrewsbury
In Shropshire, members of our Local Roads team have been involved for some time with the Priory School and Business Enterprise College in the county town of Shrewsbury. Our teams work alongside the Business Studies Department to assist students with their business projects, offering help and guidance on a number of subjects. We have also provided interview practise, presentations and careers information and have hosted visits to our operations headquarters in Shrewsbury.

Beehives for the MOD in Cosford
We are running a sustainability project at our MOD operations in DCAE Cosford. CarillionEnterprise has recently introduced beehives onto the estate to attract bees to the area. The team at the site also volunteered its time to plant trees and flowers to attract more local wildlife.

Wolverhampton Roadshows
In Wolverhampton Community Centre a number of roadshows have been set up by Enterprise and Severn Trent Water to showcase the work that will be taking place in the area. The roadshows demonstrate old water pipes and compare them with new water pipes, provide information on materials being used, a system pack for toilets, fat trap systems and safety information about sites.

Shropshire Air Ambulance
Our Shropshire teams held a Golf Knockout Tournament to raise funds for the local Air Ambulance in Shropshire. The service the Air Ambulance provides is vital to the area.

Enterprise sponsors Woolston Rovers
In Warrington we have sponsored the Woolston Rovers under nine's junior football team for the 2009/2010 season. The money has been used to purchase a new football kit for the A team.

Staffordshire Gully Recycling Scheme
Our local roads teams clean the gullies at the side of roads. This produces waste material and we have helped to construct a dedicated facility in Staffordshire to separate and recycle this waste. The facility dries out the waste collected and allows it to be used as compost by local grounds maintenance teams.

Wolverhamtopn Recycling Initiatives
Our environmental teams in Wolverhampton held a recycling poster competition for the children in schools around the city, with the theme of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. The winning entry appeared on the side of our waste collection vehicles. The teams also provided exhibition tours throughout the city and attended schools, roadshows and special events to communicate recycling and waste minimisation messages.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust
Enterprise has joined the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust on a corporate membership. On 3 August 2010, nine Enterprise employees volunteered their time to help carry out nature conservation work at Hem Heath nature reserve in Staffordshire. The Environment is a key focus area for Enterprise and events such as this one give employees the opportunity to give something back to their local area.
